11 Resources to Help You Love the Skin You’re In

Body Independence Week is wrapping up and I hope you’ve found the posts helpful so far! Stories have been shared, activities have been done, and I hope you’re ending this week with a greater sense of body confidence than you had when you began. To cap things off, the final post of this year’s Body Independence Week will feature 11 tips and resources¬†to help you love the skin you’re in! As we close out the week, I hope you’ll use the information below to continue on your own body independence journey. ūüôā

1. Take Part in Body Independence Week!

Obviously, this has to be on the list. You start by declaring your body independence. Use this declaration throughout the week to stay on track. This whole week has been about bettering your body image, improving your self-talk, and feeling more confident in the skin you’re in. During Body Independence Week, find your body independence mantra¬†and challenge the statements you tell yourself. There’s more, of course, and you can check out the full series of posts HERE.

2. Jennifer Kass’ 7-Day Self-Love Reset

Spend time connecting with yourself, being compassionate, and looking for patterns in the stories you tell yourself about your body. Then, clear the air and connect with your body. You can find the self-love reset on Well+Good. Self-love is always important. Showing yourself some love is one of the first steps to loving the skin you’re in. I talked about self-love this week, so it makes sense for this post to include at least one resource for a self-love reset.

3. Create a Happiness Jar (or Confidence Jar)

You may have seen these on Pinterest, but they’re really a great way to focus on the positive at the end of each day. At the end of the day, every day, grab a scrap of paper, a receipt, or a post-it – whatever paper is handy -and write down upon the happiest moment of that day for YOU. Maybe you loved the way your butt looked in a pair of jeans, or¬†you crushed a new PR, or maybe you won a big contract¬†or were promoted at¬†work. Put down the positive thought or event, the date, and then fold it and stick it in the jar. Anytime you’re feeling down or unsure of yourself, check in with your jar. Pull a few notes out and remind yourself of how awesome you are!

4. Beauty Redefined

Beauty Redefined is dedicated to promoting positive body image and resilience through teaching people to (1) recognize, (2) redefine, and (3) resist harmful messages about female bodies in media and cultural discourse. The Beauty Redefined non-profit began as a passion project for 30-year-old identical twins with PhDs in the study of media and body image and has grown to what is now. They offer an 8-week online program that delivers a serious, systematic approach to tackling body image issues and have a great Instagram worth following.

5. Dare Greatly and Rewrite Your SFD

Your SFD is your “Shitty First Draft.”¬†I first heard this term while reading Rising Strong by Dr. Bren√© Brown, but she notes that the idea is Anne Lamott’s. Brown also wrote¬†Daring Greatly. Our SFD is what we tell ourselves initially – it is our reactionary response, where we “channel whatever voices and visions come through and onto the page.” If you’re struggling with confidence, allow yourself to be vulnerable in your shitty first draft. Then, rewrite it. ¬†Shift and change¬†the stories you tell about yourself about who you are, why you make the choices you do, and how much power you have over those choices. Overtime, your SFDs won’t be so S.

6. My Body Screening

I honestly think most of us can benefit from speaking to someone about how we feel.¬†¬†My Body Screening ¬†is all about body image and helping you find resources in your area. How useful is that. You choose your location, then choose¬†the name of any of the mental health centers in your area, and then you’ll be put through to a free online screening. If you do need help,¬†GO HERE¬†next to find some help – there may even be free and/or sliding scale options in your area!¬†Chat online or on the phone.

Sometimes doing all the things that are supposed to lead to a better body-image and happiness can feel like a long list of chores. I don’t want you to feel that way! Choose two or three of these tools/tips to focus on.

7. Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself

This book from Dr. Neff, who I mentioned in this week’s post on self-compassion, offers exercises and action plans for dealing struggles such as weight loss and the things we may encounter on a daily basis. If you want to limit self-criticism, improve your body image to find body independence, and try something you may have written off in the past, then this may be a book for you try. It’s¬†less than $10 on Amazon. This book will help you address your self-esteem and will encourage you to tap into your emotions with kindness.

8. Body Positive Mantras

Earlier this week, I shared a playlist and encouraged you to find your own body independence mantra. If you need a change of mantra with each week, Greatist compiled a fantastic list of body positive mantras. From the bright yellow (and happy) one you see below, to one that proclaims, “I am enough. I have enough,” this body positive mantra roundup is a great go-to when you struggle to find the words you need to tell yourself. Body positive thoughts are always a great idea! ūüôā

9. My Body Gallery

My Body Gallery is all about what women (and men) really look like.¬†This site features a collection of photos that “will help more women see themselves more clearly.” The My Body Gallery project’s goal is to help women objectively see what they look like and come to some acceptance that each is beautiful. These photos are uploaded by the women themselves. Then, you can filter by your age, height, weight, body shape, etc. to see how unique each of us are, even with similar measurements. No two women are the same and no two bodies are either. You can also view some of the body stories that others¬†have shared.

10. The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women

This is another book that makes the list! Author and journalist Naomi Wolf¬†uses stats and examples to document some of the pressures women feel when it comes to beauty in the media. She talks about how women are seen in ads, X-rated materials, and the rest of entertainment and media. She discusses the scrutiny women face for the choices they make with regards to their appearance. Wolf encourages the¬†rejection of these idealistic and unrealistic goals in favor of a positive self-image and body confidence.¬†Much like Dr. Neff’s book, you can find Wolf’s book on Amazon for less than $10!

11. NEDA

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is the leading¬†501 (c)(3)¬†non-profit organization in the United States advocating on behalf of and supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. Whether you’re struggling with body image, body confidence, or an eating disorder – or know someone who is –¬†NEDA is a great resource. By going to their Find Treatment section, you can find the resources in your area, from individual therapy to mindfulness, and intuitive eating.

Body Independence Week Main ImageToday, we have two activities!

The first, I want you to go through your social, blog, and RSS feeds and UNFOLLOW or UNLIKE anyone or anything that does not empower you, make you feel confident, or bring you joy. It‚Äôs time for a social media purge. If you’re following an account that makes you feel body¬†dependent, or upset, judged, etc., I want you to unfollow that account or page.

The second, take a look back at your body independence declaration. Write out how you feel now compared to where you were when this week began. Good things and change can take time, but I hope that during this week you were more kind to yourself and you feel more confident in who you are. Be hones about how you feel and expressive when explaining why. Anytime you need a rest, come back and update your declaration before working through the other activities.
